PPRC supported an investigation into possible zinc sources at a metal fabricator and coating manufacturer. They paint large metal pieces in paint booths , but also have a large, paved lot, with several buildings, and outdoor storage. The plant wanted to look for ways to reduce the generation of zinc pollution throughout all operations.
They exceeded their NPDES permit limits for zinc and had already installed an onsite filtration system for stormwater prior to discharge.
Treatment of runoff is often a viable solution for certain pollutants in stormwater, however, source control measures, or eliminating or reducing sources before they are generated in the first place, are often more effective than trying to remove zinc once it is in the stormwater.
This rapid response sought to focus on preventing the release of zinc through pollution prevention.
