Art and craft projects are fun and provide a creative way for people to express themselves. However, some art materials contain hazardous chemicals. Artists working on a regular basis with potentially hazardous products are subject to both acute (immediate) and chronic (long term) exposure. These best practices to minimize unnecessary exposure are presented in this report.

State and county inspectors and/or technical assistance providers often visit schools and find that two of the higher concern areas of study, with respect to harmful products and chemicals, are school laboratories and art classrooms. This rapid response focuses on minimizing human health hazards in art, by identification of, and use of safer products, following use instructions, and minimizing exposure.
