Resources for Craft Breweries
Craft breweries are one of the fastest growing industries in the Northwest and the nation. Though individually small operations, breweries collectively see significant throughputs of energy, water, and waste. Due to their small sizes, they can lack resources to manage the impacts of their operations. But many breweries are acting as leaders of sustainable development.
As prominent community businesses and gathering places, breweries can function as model stewards for environmental health. Those committed to sustainability can build trust among customers, the community, and the local and regional government. PPRC is here to help – to connect breweries with useful resources, with technical assistance, and with each other – to improve both environmental and economic performance.

We manage a ListServ for craft breweries. If you are a brewer looking for solutions to common, or uncommon, problems with energy, water, or waste (or anything else!), you can join the conversation and be connected with an active community of brewers and technical assistance providers. Workshops for Sustainable Brewing
PPRC has organized a series of Workshops for Sustainable Brewing. These workshops have provided craft breweries with valuable resources to green operations in cost-effective ways. Below you’ll find links to summaries of these workshops, including presentations and referenced resources.
- Sustainable Brewery Workshop in Bellingham, WA – September 28, 2016 – Shared a host of resources available to breweries looking to minimize their environmental impact while also saving money. The event was held in Boundary Bay’s beautiful Mountain Room, fermentation tanks bubbling away in the background.
- Sustainable Brewery Workshop in Bend, OR – September 8, 2016 – Provided info about how breweries can successfully manage wastewater, energy, and water use. The event, jointly organized by the City of Bend, was held at Worthy Brewing’s beautiful Brewhouse and Pub, a model of environmentally conscious and forward thinking operations.
- Sustainable Brewery Workshop in Woodinville, WA – How can we brew beer better? Presenters detailed a slew of metrics, services, resources, and tools available to help brewers get a better gauge of resources and opportunities available to decrease environmental impact while saving money.
- Brewers Association – 2015 Sustainability Benchmarking Report – The report includes utility and production data from breweries around the country, representing a variety of geographic locations and brewing scales. The report also “provides a platform to share best practices to identify how to use water more efficiently, generate less wastewater and solid waste, decrease total energy usage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The Brewers Association is also offering Benchmarking Tools that allow brewers to compare utility usage data to other participating breweries.
- Brewers Association – Water & Wastewater Sustainability Manual – A consolidated resource for effective water and wastewater management solutions in the craft brewers segment. Solutions outlined can apply to all breweries, regardless of location and operational size. It will provide guidance for small brewers that are just beginning to explore water and wastewater reduction programs, as well as new ideas for brewers that are looking to improve a well-established program or build improved efficiency into expansions or new facilities. Brewers will also find tools they can easily incorporate to integrate water use reduction and conservation measures into everyday operations and to identify on-site wastewater treatment opportunities.
- Brewers Association – Solid Waste Reduction Manual – This solid waste sustainability manual is a consolidated resource for effective solid waste management solutions in the craft brewers segment. Solutions offered can apply to all breweries, regardless of location and operational size. Guidance is provided for brewers that are just beginning to explore solid waste reduction programs, as well as for brewers that are looking to improve a well-established program.
- Brewers Association – Energy Sustainability Manual – This energy sustainability manual is a consolidated resource for effective energy management and GHG reduction solutions in the craft brewers segment. Solutions outlined can apply to all breweries, regardless of location and operational size. Guidance is provided for brewers that are just beginning to explore energy management and GHG reduction programs, as well as for brewers that are looking to improve a well-established program.
- Institute for Environmental Research and Education (IERE) Life Cycle Assessment software for breweries – IERE offers Life Cycle Assessment software that allows breweries to understand the environmental impacts of their decisions while creating an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
