This year’s Regional Roundtable will focus on innovation in business. Why, when, and how does innovation take root? How is it tied to sustainability?

The Roundtable brings together professionals of all stripes – manufacturing specialists, industry leaders, researchers, and sustainability gurus – to explore how innovation can improve both economic performance and environmental health. This year’s event promises to be a fantastic opportunity for local businesses invested in the vitality of our region.

Day 1 Oct. 29, 2013

7:30-9:00 a.m.              P2  Professionals Breakfast

Join this group for breakfast to network, share updates, visions, and any problems that you could use help in solving.

Who should attend: P2 professionals, state agencies, consultants, business leaders, manufacturers interested in pollution prevention.

9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.    E3 in the Northwest Workshop (click for more details)

The annual Northwest E3 (Economy, Energy, and Environment) Workshop will offer opportunities to: network with other Northwest E3 teams and their clients, meet E3 leaders from other states, enhance client development capabilities, and practice on-site technical assessment skills. This year’s workshop will end with a walk-thru of the Precision Machine Works, Inc. factory in Tacoma (see below).

Who should attend: P2 professionals, sustainability professionals, environmental health professionals, energy experts, business and manufacturing assistance providers, cross-discipline thinkers.

3:00-5:30 p.m.              Walk Through: Precision Machine Works, Inc. (Off-Site)

A walk-thru of the PMW factory will be a treasure hunt for engineers and sustainability gurus. You’ll get the chance to look for improvements  amidst hi-tech metal manufacturing machines.

Who should attend: Manufacturers, business and manufacturing assistance providers, engineers, regional leaders of federal E3 partnership agencies, pollution prevention professionals, environmental assessment professionals, university researchers and programs.

Keynote Speaker: Yoram Bauman, The Standup Economist

Start your morning with a strong cup of coffee, a hearty breakfast, and a good laugh! Bauman, “the world’s first and only stand-up economist,” has appeared on PBS and NPR, and shared the stage with everyone from Robin Williams to Paul Krugman. He goals in life include: reforming economics education, lowering taxes on things we like (working, saving, investing), and raising taxes on things we don’t like (eg., carbon). Hilarious? See for yourself.

12:30-1:30 p.m.           LUNCH Talk: Innovation: Yes, There Can Be a Sustainable Capitalism!

              Karl Ostrom, PhD, NBIS Co-Executive Director

Escalating ecosystem crises call for innovative approaches that will enable business, government and NGOs to work together to build prosperity within the context of system boundaries. One of the least talked about and most crucial “innovations” is building cross-sector collaborations to update marketplace incentives and regulations that will enable a sustainable capitalism. Ostrom will offer an analysis of needs and practical steps to encourage such multi-sector collaboration. Effective problem-solving, innovative technologies, and impact oriented financial investments all depend upon marketplace price signals that are in harmony with ecosystem constraints and societal needs in order to achieve a scale of magnitude that matches environmental and societal challenges.

1:45-4:00 p.m.             Training Workshop

1:45-2:45 p.m.              Jumpstarting the Move to Safer Chemicals, Brian Penttila, PPRC

Recent and pending changes in chemicals regulation will force many businesses to re-assess their chemical use and consider movement to safer products and processes. Governments, industry associations and NGOs are advancing new tools and programs to address these changing regulations and market forces. Penttila will demonstrate how some of these tools can be useful for businesses navigating a new regulatory climate.

Who should attend: Engineers of any type, toxicologists, design specialists, manufacturing decision makers, environmental health and sustainability professionals, researchers and lab professionals, and P2 professionals.  

3:00-4:00 p.m.           Practical Alternatives Assessment (working title), Larry Garcia, Seattle City Light

It is often difficult to determine what is the best chemical product for a certain purpose. This session will start with a brief introduction to the City Light chemical approval process. This process highlights products of high hazards where an alternative would be preferred. We will then walk through several different thought processes and methods for finding an alternative product.

Driving Directions

From North:

  • Take I-5 South to Exit 133 towards City Center Tacoma
  • merge onto I-705 N, take A St. Exit on left towards City Center
  • keep left at the fork, follow signs for S.15 Street/Pacific Avenue and merge onto S 15th St .
  • Turn Right onto Broadway. Destination will be on left.

From South:

  • Take I-5 North to Exit 132 for S 38th St.
  • Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Washington 16 W/Gig Harbor/Bremerton
  • Follow signs for Interstate 705 N/Washington 7 S
  • Follow signs for City Center and merge onto I-705 N
  • Take the A St exit on the left toward City Center
  • Keep left at the fork, follow signs for S.15 Street/Pacific Avenue and merge onto S 15th St
  • Turn right onto Broadway. Destination will be on left.

Self-parking is available at Hotel Murano for $15 per night, plus tax, and valet parking for $19 per night, plus tax.

Public Transport

From SeaTac Airport

On weekdays, the ST Express Bus 574 (Southbound- SeaTac to Lakewood) runs about every half hour from the airport. Note that the Sound Transit buses do NOT leave from the Sound Transit Link Light Rail station, but from bus bays at the S end of the airport baggage claim. This map includes bus route 574.

Get off at 26th St. E & D St. E by Tacoma Dome, walk about ½ block East to Sound Transit Tacoma Link Light Rail Tacoma Dome station. Get on train going towards the Theater District. Get off at Convention Center station at 15th & Commerce, and walk to Hotel Murano at 13th & Broadway (about 2 blocks). The train runs about every 12 minutes most of the day. Note that the Sound Transit schedule is good through 9/27/13 so be sure to check the schedule again in October to see if times have changed.
