Why Take the Safer Chemistry Challenge?May 16, 2014
If your business is interested in using less toxic chemicals in its processes or products, you may want to get involved in the WA Department of Ecology’s Safer Chemistry Challenge. The challenge encourages and helps Northwest businesses to use safer chemical ingredients.
Ecology is launching the challenge on Tuesday, May 21 with an informational webinar for any businesses considering joining. Businesses can also go here for more information about the challenge or Ecology’s Green Chemistry initiatives.
As part of the state’s shift toward promoting Green Chemistry, the Safer Chemistry Challenge offers businesses and organizations a voluntary framework that they can use to set goals, assess safer alternatives, and implement positive changes. The challenge is open to all types of businesses: manufacturers, chemical formulators, or retail stores. All business can benefit from evaluating the chemicals in their processes or products to see if safer alternatives are available.
For participating, businesses receive more than a pat on the back. Some of the benefits include:
- Opportunity for a no-cost chemical hazard assessment.
- Access to technical training, case studies and tools.
- Notifications about changes to chemical regulations.
- Businesses and organizations that are proven leaders in protecting human health and the environment will be named “Safer Chemistry Champions“.
As Ecology notes on its website: “Safer chemistry is smart business. Increasingly, customers want to know the impacts that their purchasing decisions have. Switching to safer chemicals can also save companies money by protecting their workers, preventing environmental problems, and reducing compliance costs.”
