Tis the Season for … Sewer OverflowsDecember 4, 2013
Tis the season for holiday cheer, good tidings, and, oh yeah, sewer overflows.
The holiday season sees more clogged sewers than any other time of year. The reason is simple. We indulge in obscene amounts of fatty foods, and in our zombie-like food comas we forget to appropriately dispose of the fat, oil, and grease (FOG).
So as you lean over the sink this Christmas – prepared to shovel puddles of gravy and stuffing into the food dispenser – think of the poor sewermen and women who spend their holidays cleaning up the mess. And think of your tax dollars…
What is the appropriate way to dispose of grease? According to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, it’s pretty simple:
- Can it.
- Let it harden.
- Throw it away.
If you weren’t hip to it already, you can also re-use grease in wonderful ways that can make almost any pile of veggies worth scarfing.
